La Fête de la Musique
On Saturday 17th June Alliance Française in Mbabane helped to celebrate a traditional French festival here in Swaziland. It was a wonderful day filled with smiles, dance and music. We recruited local artists to participate in the festivities, including French students at Alliance Francaise, students from Waterford as well as up-and-coming Swazi artists. It was a beautiful day with clear skies and a good feeling all around. The day kicked off at 11:30am with Swaziland’s very own Chamber Orchestra and continued with a strong range of performances including a dance group, Swazi storm. Spectators came in and out throughout the day, but la Fete de la Musique maintained a crowd of about 40-60 people. The performing artists were very cooperative ; performing for free to help us celebrate the day. The day ended with an open mic session, inviting anyone who had been inspired by the musicians and dancers to showcase their talent. Two rappers came onto stage to perform and then a brave, young boy performed a Michael Jackson dance to Smooth Criminal all on his own. This got the crowd on their feet and dancing to this song ; a great ending to a successful day ! The lively atmosphere was a tribute to the joy that music can bring.
